Why did I end up spending 15 blissful months on a dreamy island, just five steps from the sea? Honestly – it all began with a simple coincidence
A few years ago, my partner and I had been spending some time in Mumbai and were about to fly to Cape Town. The easiest connection happened to be via Mauritius 🇲🇺.
I had first visited this Island Paradise back in 2004, so we decided—almost spontaneously—to spend five days there before continuing on to South Africa.
My partner and I were looking at this time for a place to settle down together, and during those 5 days in Mauritius, we found ourselves saying:
“Well… this really wouldn’t be the worst place to live.”
So we took a leap 🌟.
Eight months later, we returned—and this time, for real.
After countless hours with real estate agents and navigating through local bureaucracy, we finally found our place: a lovely Beach House just a few steps from the sea on our favorite beach 🐚.
A hidden gem, completely off the tourist radar.
I came to Mauritius on my own a month before we moved in, and a local led me to this secluded paradise in the north of the island.
You’d never find it on your own — it’s one of those places you only discover if a local shows you the way 🌊.
The north of the island is the most developed part of Mauritius, with everything you could possibly need, yet it still feels authentic and untouched in all the right ways.
The first days in our beach house felt unreal!
I’d be cooking and glance up to see the sea just beyond the terrace.
Boats and Surfers gliding by, the beach only meters away 🏄♀️.
Every morning started with birdsong 🎶, followed by a swim in the warm turquoise waters and quiet moments on a deserted beach 🐠.
It was pure magic—something that words can hardly capture.
Like stepping into a real-life version of The Blue Lagoon… only better 🌴🌟🐬
